that some people

  • like to boss you around because you’re new.
  • can be unproductively bossy..at the end of the day, after being bossed around it becomes quite clear that things would have been much better if they had left you alone. naturally, you sort of take the blame when things don’t go as “well”.
  • think that you’re around to take their responsibilities away. i was helping to hold a plastic bag of stationery while prepping for an event when this girl came up to me and said (in a not-so-nice way) “why are you holding the microphones?” (1) they are not microphones and (2) SO WHAT if i was holding the microphones?? i just replied that i wasn’t holding no microphones and that i was just helping the admin ladies carry the stuff because it was heavy. anyway my conclusion is that she thinks i’m trying to take away her job of holding a microphone during the Q&A session (you know, where you have to run up and down steps to get the mikes to those who are asking questions so their questions can be heard by the whole auditorium). I REALLY WANT THAT JOB GIVE IT TO ME PLS
  • take it upon themselves to pander to the needs/desires of the directors and other higher-ups. this really disgusts me because they go out of their way to ensure this and that happens (and since we’re new, we keep getting warnings to stick to these “special” procedures), when actually the directors themselves can be really down to earth and couldn’t care less about all these extra things people are doing for them. i just remembered that the correct term is “bootlicking”.

and when more than one of these traits can be found in a single person..working is not just working but instead becomes like an interpersonal communication/relationship nightmare. thankfully i’m not working closely with any of these people
